Tennis is a game for life.

That’s the philosophy of the Gladstone Tennis Club in Parnell, Auckland that is in the midst of a project to rebuild the club membership and redevelop its facilities. The club is committed to getting as many people in the community as possible on the court across the full spectrum of generations. Our Professional coach, Robin Byrne and his coaching programme are pivotal in achieving this.

The Gladstone Tennis Club Management Committee began its rebuilding programme in 2006 and many initiatives have been introduced for members and run by our resident coach, Robin Byrne.

These include:

• Pizza nights on Friday nights for juniors members aged 10 and above.
• The introduction of junior club championships, and resurrecting all senior club championship categories.
• A junior ladder for beginner and advanced juniors, drawn randomly at the beginning of summer and winter seasons.
• Ladies morning – since the introduction 2 years ago 3 midweek ladies teams have now entered interclub competitions.
• Senior social tennis with coaching tips from Robin Byrne. The numbers attending this have grown significantly since Robin began this session 2 years ago.
• Regular family nights where the children play tennis and a family barbeque follows.
• End of term women’s social doubles tournaments
• An inaugural parent/child tournament with 64 entries!
• Auckland Tennis schools programme where Mark Lewis and his coaches instructed 120 pupils from Parnell School in the basics of tennis.
• Complimentary coaching for all junior members on Saturday mornings.
• Robin has also coached 7 junior members to progress to the Auckland Junior Development Squad

For the 2011/2012 season we are looking at expanding the
coaching programme to include more sessions across the junior and senior membership.

With these initiatives the club has more than doubled its membership to over 400 and was recently named one of the fastest growing clubs in New Zealand.

We have also been awarded one of the Auckland Tennis awards for most improved facilities in the region. We are committed to growing the club in a way that benefits as many people in the community as possible.
